The Austrian Grand Prix at the scenic Österreichring ended with one of the funniest and most heartwarming surprises of the 1982 season: Elio de Angelis, calm and elegant as ever, took his maiden Formula 1 victory in a finish so close it needed a photo to confirm. The Lotus driver held off a hard-charging Keke Rosberg by just 0.05 seconds - both men pushing to the line like cartoon characters in a footrace.

De Angelis had led smoothly for most of the race, driving with precision and serenity. But in the final laps, his tires faded and Rosberg, smelling victory, closed in with relentless speed. The two practically crossed the finish line side by side, the crowd unsure who had actually won. When the result came, de Angelis almost didn’t believe it himself.

Keke Rosberg, ever the showman, shook his head with a laugh and a wink. Second place was frustrating, but the race had been clean, fast, and undeniably entertaining. It was the kind of finish no one could script - equal parts skill and slapstick.

Jacques Laffite, meanwhile, snuck into third with his usual blend of experience and quiet mischief. While others fought ahead, he kept his Ligier out of trouble and collected another solid result, occasionally throwing in a few funny gestures to his pit crew mid-race.
