The 1983 United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach delivered a clear reminder that experience and composure still count for everything in Formula 1. John Watson produced one of the greatest comeback drives in the sport’s history, storming through the field from 22nd on the grid to claim a stunning victory for McLaren. His teammate, Niki Lauda, made it a McLaren 1–2 with an equally impressive charge from 23rd on the grid.
